Be sure to not get admitted here. I was brought up to the patient ward and it took 5.5 hours for someone to find out I was even in a room. If your IV kinks up for example, it alarms requiring you to hit the nurse button. Upon doing so, be prepared to wait 20 minutes until one of the nurses in the hall are done with their conversation about the family picnic. Oh, and you want to see a doctor? Lol. Want a glass of water? Lol. Save yourself some heartache and go to the WVU hospital up 81 a bit and enjoy that multi-million dollar operation up there. If any upper level personnel are seeing this, you will be hearing from me. I wanted to not believe all the horror VA stories so much but I guess it really is just a pathetic mess.
My father was sent to the VA hospital from the clinic. His doctor at the clinic advised him that he need immediate surgery and that his situation was life threatening. The clinic called ahead to the VA emergency room to let them know he would arrive soon. My father arrived at 1pm in the ER. He was in pain and had a potentially life threatening problem. He sat in the ER for 4 hours before he was seen in the ER. The doctor in the ER was completely overwhelmed and the group was extremely understaffed. The nurse advised us it was life this every day. My father finally got pain medication around 6pm. He was finally seen my the doctor at 7pm. and sent to a room at 9:30pm!! 8 1/2 hours after he arrived at the ER on Tuesday.
Absolutely competent staff! Always on point, and dedicated to fixing all issues with their patients.

When the doctor finally showed up and talked with the family he said surgery Thursday. That didn't happen. He then confirmed surgery on Friday. Remember my father was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday for a potentially life threatening situation. Almost 72 hours later he was having surgery.
Best care I ever have had. The complainers were not give suckers so they will whine.
Surgery went well, the doctor apparently did his job. Then my father sat in the hospital for the next 10 days with very little assistance or clear direction. They messed his diabetic food plan up EVERY meal he was there. Complaining was the only thing that made things improve for a short period. My father finally demanded to be sent home whether he was fit or not. He did not want to be neglected anymore.
I am happy the surgery went well, however, the VA's attention to their patients and their sense of urgency is extremely poor. It needs to be addressed. It is not right for our Vets who served our country to be treated that way.
My family and I sat in his hospital room for two days following this incident with very little communication from the doctor about the next step or what the problem was. My 66 year old mother slept on the hard floor, because the staff forgot several times to bring her a chair. It was only when we complained to the staff that my father got any attention more than a drive by. The doctors, (Dr. Baldwin) communication was extremely poor with his staff. The nurse (she was basically the only person helpful when she was there) on the floor let us know that he is very arrogant and talks over people instead of talking to them.
